How long have you been writing?
As long as I can remember. I actually had a story published in a young Maine Author’s compilation when I was in second grade. It was a unicorn story set at Popham Beach, if I remember correctly.
What inspired your story?
When I was younger, I loved to run around in the woods. My great aunt was apparently worried about this, as she told me that there are holes in the ground that you can’t see, but that you can just fall into. I remember being scared that the ground would just one day suck me up. I have sort of always been creeped out by things like that. Also, the name itself.I was at one point trying to help a friend name a band, and I came up with Agony Chamber. The band picked something else, so I made it a title, and then wrote a story to match.
Favorite horror film set in Maine?
I have to actually go with Night of the Living Deb. I loved everything about it. Second up would have to be Pet Sematary.
What makes Maine such a good setting for horror stories?
Everything! Maine has all these wild, wooded spaces that are just full of secrets and mystery. That, plus our rocky coasts, quirky and artsy characters, and the brutal winters just make it a treasure trove of ideas.
What are you currently reading?
I’m splitting my time between Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, Richard Matheson’s Hell House, and a bunch of permaculture blogs.
Who is an up and coming Maine writer we should be looking out for?
Maine has quite a few talented authors. Peter Dudar is definitely one to watch. Some others to keep an eye out for are April Hawks, EJ Fechneda, Remy Flagg, Katherine Silva, Glenn Rolfe, and several others that are in Northern Frights with us.
